Maremma: an uncontaminated territory with ancient roots and enotourist routes

Maremma is a large area in southern Tuscany. It is a perfect microcosm that stretches between the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto. Maremma is unique because of the variety of its territory: blue sea, long beaches, black rock, hills covered with woods, marshes and flat lands, green hills and natural thermal baths. It’s a timeless region with ancient roots. Here the Etruscans and then the Romans flourished for centuries leaving behind important traces in the Etruscan cities of Populonia and Roselle and many archeological finds around the region.

Maremma is not just culture and landscapes. Maremma is also an important wine-growing area with a very ancient tradition, evidenced by the vines in Scansano, the town of Morellino, those in Pitigliano with kasher wines, the sea terraces of the Isola del Giglio, up to the medieval Massa Marittima hills.

Rocca di Frassinello

The Rocca di Frassinello project was inspired by a very simple idea: to replicate the model of excellence set in motion by the Castellare di Castellina winery in a new region. We set our sights on the central Maremma area, part of the Gavorrano and Roccastrada municipalities. This area is indeed where the first French-Italian joint venture project for the production of wine took shape. The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) aimed from the very beginning to bring together the experience of Castellare in the cultivation and vinification of Tuscany’s main vine variety, the famous Sangiovese, with Lafite’s long standing know-how of classical French vines like Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz. The estate extends over 500 hectares, 90 of them are planted vineyards. This already extremely ambitious venture has been further enriched by choosing one of the most important architects in the world: Renzo Piano.
